Vancouver Island Alpine Guide
Mount Regan - 1960m/6430'

Class 3

Mount Regan is located between Mount Albert Edward and Mount Jutland; at the west end of Forbidden Plateau. A deep valley separates Regan from Forbidden Plateau; thus, the standard approach is via the Oyster River.

Park at Norm Creek fork in the Oyster River Mainline, an old sign marks this as turn off to the Gem Lake Trail. Hike up the east branch of the road to an old disintegrating bridge over Gem Creek. Cross the bridge but instead of following the trail along the south side of the creek, head up the ridge following game trails. Initially the ridge is quite distinct but broadens out higher up. Just before reaching the alpine a series of bluffs are encountered that can be ascended via gullies and steps on the right (Class 3). At tree line the ridge levels out for 300m as it heads for the steep scree and snow slopes bellow the summit ridge. Great care must be taken ascending the scree since it is very loose and large boulders can be dislodged with the slightest push. For this reason it is best to climb Regan early in the year when snow covers most of the scree. From the top of the scree a narrow ridge gently ascends to the summit.
